The PreSonus Studio 24c and 26c are a clear competitor to the Scarlett range but at a slightly cheaper price point. The 24c and 26c both fit into this price bracket and compete with similar models like the Komplete Audio and Scarlett ranges. The red looks pretty dope though.Īnother option from PreSonus is the Studio range. Most electronic music producers who may occasionally want to record something and need to output to monitors will absolutely love this. Great for a first audio interface because of the amazing form factor, high-quality preamps and versatility for a bedroom producer. Comes with a suite of FX plugins included.Headphones Output with dedicated output knob. It’s been used in both studio and live situations, it’s been through a lot and it still comes out on top. Puns aside, this interface has been a long-term studio staple for me. The company definitely got their focus right with this one. One of my personal favourites, the Scarlett 2i2 by Focusrite. While it might not have the flexibility and features of other audio interfaces (Scarlett has better preamps and input options), at $39.99 it certainly seems to be outdoing itself. If you need the cheapest audio interface available that is still reliable, then the UM2 is a great choice. Easy-access gain and output knobs on the top surface. This is the cheapest audio interface money can buy while still not sacrificing quality. The good news is, these interfaces are super affordable and still get you studio-quality sound: Universal Audio Volt 2įirst up comes the Behringer U-Phoria UM2. If you’re just starting out, you’re probably on a budget. Now, let’s dive into these audio interfaces. DSP – Can I use it to save CPU on my computer?.MIDI Interfacing – Does it double as a MIDI interface for hardware control?.Size – Is it big, small, heavy, light etc.?.While the connector and inputs/outputs determine the bulk of the purchase decision, the extras definitely need to be factored in too. If that isn’t self-explanatory, desktop interfaces can sit on your desk, while rackmount requires a rack to screw the interface into. Most low-to-middle end interfaces will be Desktop, while higher-end interfaces will be Rackmount. What does format mean? Well essentially, there are two formats. However, most consumer-grade (under $1500) interfaces are fine with pretty much any DAW.ĭepending on your OS, you just need the right drivers. This is especially true of high-end interfaces (we’re looking at you, Avid). Sometimes, a manufacturer will make an interface specifically for a certain environment. Not all interfaces are compatible with all DAWs. Need to output to multiple pairs of speakers? Probably going to need more outputs. Need to record a full drum kit? Probably going to need more inputs. Of course, more can be useful depending on your needs. Most interfaces have at least 2 quarter-inch jack outputs to connect to studio monitors, and at least 2 inputs for either a microphone or direct line input. The number and type of inputs and outputs that an audio interface has will matter greatly in the decision-making process. Very fast, low latency and the most reliable (and expensive). PCIe – A different type of connector used on internal interfaces that connectors directly to your motherboard.Firewire – An older Mac connector which historically had faster transfer speeds, but is less ideal than Thunderbolt.Thunderbolt – The second most common connector, favourable due to fast speed and compatibility with most Macs.USB – The most common form of interface connector, as it plugs directly into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 socket. There are many types of connectors that audio interfaces. What To Look ForĪudio interfaces can come with a variety of features, and depending on your needs, you need to know what to look for. There’s a lot of terminologies here, so if you get confused, make sure to check out our massive glossary of production terms. The issue is, the built-in sound card in most laptops and desktops isn’t ideal for recording instruments and vocals, or for playing sound through studio monitors. If you’re just using headphones, chances are the built-in sound card that comes with your computer is all you need (unless it’s a high-impedance model, in which case an interface is necessary). In fact, your computer actually has one built-in. You might have heard you need an audio interface to produce music. View the full rules for examples of what is and isn't acceptable. But when so many of those encounters are a boring slog, it feels like a missed opportunity to make this something more. It's a pity the action in Death Road to Canada gets so tedious, because "Oregon Trail with zombies" is a great premise, and they nail it with the randomized encounters you come across in the journey. for all the unique twists and turns in the narrative, the action itself can very easily become ho-hum boring. On top of that, this game gets really repetitive really quickly - you'll find yourself exploring the same environments repeatedly, fighting hordes of repetitive zombies. Not only is the mostly melee combat in this game annoyingly repetitive, the fact that your characters tire out fairly quickly and won't even respond when you tell them to attack until they get a breather makes for some serious frustration. When you decide to pop out of your car, you'll often head into a neighborhood exploring homes for useful stuff to loot while fighting off zombies, and this is where the game shows off some of its weakest elements. Will you find a grocery store with some nice supplies? A new comrade to add to your group? A zombie ambush? Every new step in your journey potentially holds something new and unexpected! Is that a piece of brain left over from a zombie kill, or is it a hamburger? Death Road to Canada is an Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that combines the zombie apocalypse setting with gameplay that strongly resembles The Oregon Trail, with a dash of pixellated retro-style presentation to top things off.Īs for that presentation, this game's chiptune soundtrack is quite good at times, and the game looks okay, although at times the pixellated graphics make it hard to determine just what it is that something is supposed to be. 6/23/2023 0 Comments Freezer burn shrimpDuring freezing or thawing, food poisoning bacteria could easily grow in the stuffing. Note: Do not stuff poultry or game birds before freezing them. For more information, see HGIC 3515, Safe Handling of Wild Game Birds. Remove excess fat on wild ducks and geese since it becomes rancid very quickly. Quail, dove, duck, pheasant and other game birds should be dressed and gutted as soon as possible after shooting. For more information, see HGIC 3516, Safe Handling of Wild Game Meats. Variety meats (liver, heart or sweetbreads) are ready to be wrapped and frozen after they are cold. The meat should be chilled to 32 to 36 ☏. Freezing Game Meatsįreshly slaughtered meat carcasses or pieces need to be cooled to below 40 ☏ within 24 hours to prevent souring or spoiling. Cook raw food and if you like the taste and texture, use it. Some may not look picture-perfect or be of high enough quality to serve alone, but may be edible use them to make soups or stews. Some foods will develop a rancid or off odor when frozen too long and should be discarded. (See freezer storage chart below.) If a food is not listed on the chart, you may determine its quality after defrosting. Length of Timeīecause freezing keeps food safe almost indefinitely, recommended storage times are for quality only. Keep a thermometer in your freezing compartment or freezer to check the temperature. Use a free-standing freezer set at 0 ☏ or below for long-term storage of frozen foods. Eat those foods as soon as possible for best quality. If a refrigerator freezing compartment can’t maintain 0 ☏, or if the door is opened frequently, use it only for short-term food storage. Instead, spread them out in one layer on the shelves, stacking them only after frozen solid. If your home freezer has a “quick-freeze” shelf, use it. Ideally, food 2 inches thick should freeze completely in about two hours. During thawing, they damage the cells and cause meat to “drip” or lose juiciness. Slow freezing creates large, disruptive ice crystals. Freeze Rapidlyįreeze food as quickly as possible to maintain its quality. Bone darkening results when pigment seeps through the porous bones of young poultry into the surrounding tissues when the poultry meat is frozen and thawed. However, the bones and the meat near them can become dark. This may be due to lack of oxygen, freezer burn or abnormally long storage.įreezing doesn’t usually cause color changes in poultry. The bright red color of meat as purchased usually turns dark or pale brown depending on its variety. Color ChangesĬolor changes can occur in frozen foods. Heavily freezer-burned foods may have to be discarded for quality reasons. Cut freezer-burned portions away either before or after cooking the food. It appears as grayish-brown leathery spots and is caused by air reaching the surface of the food. Freezer Burnįreezer burn does not make food unsafe, merely dry in spots. If you notice that a package has accidentally torn or has opened while food is in the freezer, it is still safe to use merely overwrap or rewrap it. It is not necessary to rinse meat and poultry before freezing. Use these materials or airtight freezer containers to repackage family packs into smaller amounts or freeze foods from opened packages. For instructions on packaging with drugstore wrap, see the images below. Unless you will be using the food in a month or two, overwrap these packages as you would any food for long-term storage using airtight heavy-duty foil, plastic wrap or freezer paper, or place the package inside a plastic bag. Proper packaging helps maintain quality and prevent “freezer burn.” It is safe to freeze meat or poultry directly in its supermarket wrapping, but this type of wrap is permeable to air. In meat and poultry products, there is little change in nutrient value during freezer storage. Nutrient Valueįreezing does not destroy nutrients. Thorough cooking will destroy all parasites. It is not recommended to rely on home freezing to destroy trichina. However, very strict government-supervised conditions must be met. Trichina and other parasites can be destroyed by sub-zero freezing temperatures. Since they will then grow at about the same rate as microorganisms on fresh food, handle thawed items as you would any perishable. Once thawed, however, these microbes can again become active, multiplying under the right conditions to levels that can lead to foodborne illness. Freezing preserves food for extended periods because it prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause both food spoilage and foodborne illness. Only the quality suffers with lengthy freezer storage. Wholesome food stored constantly at 0 ☏ will always be safe. 6/23/2023 0 Comments Splashshopper for blackberryFind another recipe (not all pancake recipes require cake flour) or add cake flour to your shopping list. The 3rd application in the package is SplashShopper for shopping list management. Following our dense pancake fiasco, I don't recommend substituting AP for cake flour. As for substitutions, 1 cup plus 2 T cake flour can substitute for 1 cup of AP flour in a pinch. I alternately see two brands: Swans Down and Pillsbury Softasilk. The resulting pancakes were disastrous, a far cry from the light and fluffy breakfast we enjoy so much.Ĭake flour is available in the baking aisle of any grocery store. My recipe calls for 2 cups of cake flour we used one cup of cake flour and one cup of AP. We were making pancakes and she only had half the amount of cake flour needed. I had the opportunity to do some cooking in my sister's kitchen recently and rediscovered how a simple substitution can radically alter a recipe. I know of no company who produces a more natural cake flour. Chlorinating cake flour serves to further break down the gluten. Pastry flour has a similarly low protein content as cake flour but it's not chlorinated. On the opposite end of the spectrum is bread flour - a higher protein/gluten flour that gives bread and bagels their chewiness. The reduced gluten (protein) yields a lighter, more tender crumb. So, what's the difference? Cake flour has less protein than AP flour, in fact the lowest protein content of all four flours in my pantry. In addition to kitchen standard flour - AP - I highly recommend keeping cake flour. It's not necessary for the average home baker to keep four white flours. I've since labeled them to reduce confusion. I had four types of white flour in unmarked containers: all purpose (AP), pastry, cake and bread flour. My children's babysitter had a hard time baking in my house when the kids wanted to make cookies. While I support Intelligentsia’s move isn’t Zell’s statement an admission that up until now they have been purveyors of jug wine? Once the popping has slowed remove from the heat and transfer kettle corn into serving bowl. It's way bigger than we need it to be (look for something around 6 quarts if you decide to become a popcorn fanatic like me) but we REALLY like popcorn. It's just a stainless steel stock pot - about 10 quarts. I got our present one at Target, I think. We've always had a dedicated popcorn pot (we also have an electric popper but I don't care much for the popcorn it produces). I've been tinkering with it at home ever since and have settled on a recipe replicated all over the internets. Whether you’re playing a campaign level or just dipping into a skirmish, Age Of Empires 4 knows exactly what strategy fans want from an RTS. This sandbox approach makes completing a level extremely gratifying – it’s the solution you come up with that secures a win, so seeing that victorious (though anti-climatic) fade-to-black feels deeply personal. You’re never just hurtled into an on-the-rails scenario – you’re almost always given an end-objective, and how you get that done is left largely up to you. While the emotional stakes varied from campaign to campaign, each individual level had no problem with making sure you’re completely invested in the gameplay itself. While it was interesting to learn more about my own country’s history, unlike the Moscow campaign, there were few characters I properly rooted for. Since it lightens blues and darkens reds, yellows, and oranges, this filter can also help separate elements in scenes with a mix of colors. It can make a foggy scene more “moody” as it amplifies the effect of haze or fog. Blue filters aren’t typically used in black and white photography, but do have some uses. The green filter make green foliage lighter, which is useful when shooting scenes with dark green leaves. It’s recommended to shoot at +1 to +2 stops of extra exposure with this filter. Shooting flowers with this filter will also produce a significantly more dramatic look. When used with film that has extended red sensitivity like Ilford SFX 200, it will produce an infrared-like look. With this filter, the blue skies will look black on print, while architecture with mixed materials will look clearer and more dramatic. Ilford recommends shooting at +1 stop extra exposure for this dramatic effect.Ī red filter creates even bolder results compared to yellow and orange filters. It also renders flowers more prominently compared to the surrounding foliage. Blue skies will look very dark, making it a good choice for darkening the skies even more. Orange filters produce stronger results than yellow filters, but not as bold and dramatic as red filters. This makes skin tones and flesh tones look more natural, and provides more variation between foliage colors. While this filter darkens blues, it makes green, yellow, orange and red lighter. It will also produce an improved penetration of haze and fog. It darkens the blue sky to give a more prominent separation between the darkened sky and the white clouds, especially for print. As a versatile accessory, photographers use it to bring out the clouds. The yellow filter, for example, is the “classic” first choice for black and white photography. To give us an idea, Ilford has a quick but informative guide on which color filter works best for what purpose or effect.
