However, while the game does a great job giving players all kinds of unique twists and turns in their journey, the actual action itself is tedious and repetitive, which lets down a game that otherwise had lots of potential.Ask a question Submit memes/shitposts Hide Spoilers Daily Question Thread | Read our Wiki | Join our Discord | 2022 GotY Results | Send a ModMail Tl dr - Death Road to Canada is an Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays like the Oregon Trail set in a zombie apocalypse. But when so many of those encounters are a boring slog, it feels like a missed opportunity to make this something more. ![]() It's a pity the action in Death Road to Canada gets so tedious, because "Oregon Trail with zombies" is a great premise, and they nail it with the randomized encounters you come across in the journey. for all the unique twists and turns in the narrative, the action itself can very easily become ho-hum boring. On top of that, this game gets really repetitive really quickly - you'll find yourself exploring the same environments repeatedly, fighting hordes of repetitive zombies. Not only is the mostly melee combat in this game annoyingly repetitive, the fact that your characters tire out fairly quickly and won't even respond when you tell them to attack until they get a breather makes for some serious frustration. When you decide to pop out of your car, you'll often head into a neighborhood exploring homes for useful stuff to loot while fighting off zombies, and this is where the game shows off some of its weakest elements. Will you find a grocery store with some nice supplies? A new comrade to add to your group? A zombie ambush? Every new step in your journey potentially holds something new and unexpected! Is that a piece of brain left over from a zombie kill, or is it a hamburger? Given that one is absolutely useless and the other might be worth diving through a horde of zombies to nab, it's kinda' important to know.Īs for the gameplay, this game does manage to capture that compelling element of The Oregon Trail, where you never quite know whether the next step of your journey will bring good or bad luck, but there's a wealth of possibilities that drives you ahead to see what happens next. Death Road to Canada is an Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that combines the zombie apocalypse setting with gameplay that strongly resembles The Oregon Trail, with a dash of pixellated retro-style presentation to top things off.Īs for that presentation, this game's chiptune soundtrack is quite good at times, and the game looks okay, although at times the pixellated graphics make it hard to determine just what it is that something is supposed to be. ![]()
